Quad/Graphics Plant Begins Reprinting

A Quad/Graphics plant in Lomira, WI, that was damaged in a weekend fire has begun reprinting catalogs and magazines lost in the blaze, the printer said yesterday.

Damage from the fire, which began the night of July 12 and burned through the following day, was restricted to a storage building that contained unfinished magazine and catalog pages that were awaiting compilation and binding, the company said. The plant itself was undamaged and is fully operable.

Quad/Graphics did not disclose damage estimates and said that the cause of the fire remains under investigation. No company employees were harmed, though a non-employee, 22-year-old Keith Freiberg, an employee of a building maintenance company, became trapped in a vehicle and died.

Quad/Graphics clients include catalogers Lillian Vernon, Lands' End, Bloomingdale's By Mail and Chadwick's of Boston. A spokesman for Lillian Vernon said the company's president was visiting the site of the fire yesterday to assess damage.

Representatives of Lands' End and Bloomingdale's said their companies were unaffected by the fire. A representative of Chadwick's of Boston could not be reached yesterday.

The 2 million-square-foot plant, which Quad/Graphics calls the largest single print facility in the Western Hemisphere, has 1,800 employees. Only 330 were present during the blaze, and only three forklift operators were in the section that burned during the fire.
