Google launches On-Demand Indexing for publishers

Today Google launched On-Demand Indexing, included in Google Site Search, which allows Web site publishers to add new pages and site updates into on-site search results.

Previously, Site Search users could not control when their sites would be re-indexed by Google’s Web crawler, a process which could sometimes take days.

Site owners who use Site Search will now have an “Index Now” button to refresh their site’s search results and content. New pages may be searchable within hours, but would take no longer than a day, according to Google.

Adobe has been named as one of the first customers of the technology.

“On-Demand Indexing was essential for our recent launch of Adobe Creative Suite 4, the biggest software release in the company’s history,” said Tanya Wendling, senior director for Learning Resources at Adobe, in a statement. “Google Site Search made it easy to implement search across our Creative Suite product line and online sites, and we are now able to index thousands of new pages and make them available to millions of users worldwide within hours.”

On-Demand Indexing will effect only searches within a publisher’s site, and not searches done from Google.com.
