Vermont tourism’s lackluster Twitter campaign

In July the Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing declared it was inviting Vermonters to tweet under the moniker @ThisIsVt.

Following in the steps of Sweden, which offers citizens weeklong tenures as official Twitter spokespeople under the handle @Sweden, @ThisIsVt asks Vermonters to compete for a chance at tweeting on behalf of their beloved state. Vermont tourism is building traction via notices in media outlets like the The New York Times. In the space of roughly 24 hours, @ThisIsVt went from 570 followers to, as of this writing, 941. But will this pace continue (@Sweden has nearly 69,000 followers).

At issue might be two rigorous-sounding interviews to qualify as a prospective tweeter, which contradicts the initial backing of the campaign as a calling for an “uncensored voice.” Essentially, Vermont is requesting people to interview for a PR job that they will perform for free.
