USPS Lifts Suspension of Standard Mail in Another ZIP Code

The U.S. Postal Service lifted its suspension of Standard and Periodicals mail yesterday for the 396 ZIP code region in Mississippi. Last week, it lifted the suspension for ZIP codes 369, 393 and 394 in the state.

The suspensions were prompted by damage from Hurricane Katrina last month in the Gulf Coast.

Drop-shipment appointments to these ZIP codes are being accepted, the USPS said, but appointments are required before any drop shipments can occur.

The USPS is still not accepting any Standard (letters and flats) or Periodicals mail — from any source — addressed for delivery within the following ZIP code ranges: Mississippi, 395; and Louisiana, 700, 701 and 704.

The Express Mail embargo to the ZIP code 395 range was lifted yesterday as well. The postal service also is accepting Express Mail destined for Mississippi ZIP codes 369, 393, 394 and 395 but not for Louisiana codes 700, 701 and 704.

The USPS also said Social Security check distribution has been extended to Sept. 16 for affected Mississippi locations.
