The U.S. Postal Service has awarded four national environmental service contracts designed to reduce costs, increase efficiency and assure standardized delivery of services.
The contracts, which will be administered by the USPS' Purchasing and Materials Service Center in Dallas, have been awarded to URS Corp., Gaithersburg, MD; Earth Tech, San Diego; Roy F. Weston Inc., Vernon Hills, IL; and DPRA, Manhattan, KS.
The four contracts will replace more than 270 contracts and will save the USPS $30 million over the next four years. Services covered under the contracts include planning, program development, testing, sampling, analysis, compliance reviews, training, studies and surveys on environmental issues.
The contracts will allow the USPS to obtain services necessary to comply with environmental regulations and programs while reducing costs, eliminating duplication of efforts and taking advantage of innovations and increased efficiencies by the contractors.
“The postal service has long been recognized as a national environmental leader,” said Dennis Baca, manager of environmental management policy at the USPS. “These national environmental contracts allow our organization to leverage its substantial purchasing power, to standardize service delivery to our internal customers and to provide incentives for suppliers to find innovative ways to reduce postal costs.”
In addition, Baca said, “By streamlining our environmental contracting, we will be better able to protect the environment for future generations of Americans.”
The USPS operates the nation's largest alternative-fuel delivery fleet in the nation. The fleet is expected to grow to more than 30,000 vehicles by 2002. It is also one of the largest recyclers in the nation and is the largest user of recycled motor oil and retreaded tires.
