Overnite Transportation Co., Richmond, VA, the less-than-truckload carrier subsidiary of Union Pacific Corp., now offers guaranteed free pickup service nationwide, the company announced yesterday.
Less-than-truckload, or LTL, refers to a shipment of freight that weighs less than the requirement for the application of a truckload rate — usually less than 10,000 pounds.
The Guaranteed Pickup Service is available at no extra cost; if Overnite fails to pick up and deliver the shipment as scheduled, it moves free of charge.
Customers can request the Guaranteed Pickup Service by contacting an Overnite service center by midday and arranging to have their shipments ready for pickup by the end of the same business day.
John Fain, senior vice president of sales and marketing, said the Guaranteed Pickup Service was successfully tested since February in the Northeast and was installed this summer in the Midwest.
“The operation has been battle-tested to ensure its success,” Fain said.
The Guaranteed Pickup Service is the newest product in a series of service enhancements that the company has made throughout the year. Last month, Overnite launched Advantage Canada, expanding its service to provide full-province coverage for Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland, and the Maritime Provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, offering coverage to nearly 100 percent of the Canadian population.
Overnite also announced in August the expansion of Advantage Overnite, which provides full coverage in 32 states east of the Rockies and more than 15,000 next- and second-day service lanes.
