Omnicom names Nelson digital CEO

In recognition of digital’s growing piece of its business, Omnicom Group has appointed Organic founder Jonathan Nelson CEO of Omnicom Digital, a newly created position.

Nelson is working across the company’s various agencies to identify digital initiatives’ strengths and weaknesses and possible opportunities for acquisition. The position, officially created on September 30, is heavily focused on educating traditional agencies about digital, as well as analytics and ad networks.

“Digital is taking a larger and larger component of the marketing budget and of our portfolio at Omnicom, and we thought that we should have someone to take a look across all of the different assets as well as trying to develop more opportunities,” said Nelson. “My job is to facilitate ways that we can be more digital, whether that is in a digital agency or in one of our more traditional ad agencies.”

Nelson joined Omnicom in 2002, when it acquired interactive agency Organic. He founded Organic in 1993.

Nelson will also collaborate with other Omnicom executives around the world as he builds out the digital division. He did not say whether or not he will hire staff, but he commented, “We are looking across the world at geographies that we might need some help.”
