Nordstrom Hopes Markdowns Cure Post-Tragedy Sales Blues

Nordstrom Inc. has started its first impromptu sale in nearly 40 years at www.nordstrom.com and its 126 retail stores.

Citing the economic downturn that has worsened since the terrorist attacks, the clothier put markdowns of 33 percent to 60 percent into play Friday. The sale runs through Oct. 8 and involves several items from its women's, men's and children's fall racks.

Normally, the retailer sticks to its schedule of holding an anniversary sale in July and clearance sales in June and November.

“We hope the fall sale will give customers a reason to shop during these difficult times,” said Blake Nordstrom, president/CEO of the Seattle company.

The retailer plans to donate 1 percent of the revenue generated through the sale to the American Red Cross. Nordstrom is placing a minimum of $1 million on the pledge.
