NJ, MI No-Call Lists Near Passage

With no word yet from the Federal Trade Commission on a national do-not-call list, lawmakers are proceeding with their own DNC lists.

In Michigan, a DNC bill last week received unanimous approval by the state Senate and House of Representatives and awaits signature by Gov. John Engler.

In New Jersey, the Assembly last week approved an amendment to a DNC bill, offered by Gov. James McGreevey, that removed an exemption for calls to consumers with whom a company has an existing business relationship. The bill must be approved as is by the state Senate before receiving McGreevey's signature.

The two states stand in contrast with California, which has delayed setting up its no-call registry in anticipation of the FTC's ruling.
