Despite a hold on some regular activity in Congress because of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the House Judiciary Committee is still planning early next month to finalize a bill that proposes a five-year extension of the Internet tax moratorium.
Rep. Christopher Cox, R-CA, sponsored the bill, H.R 1552, the Internet Non-Discrimination Act. In August, the bill was unanimously approved by the Judiciary Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law.
Congress passed the original moratorium, the Internet Tax Freedom Act, in October 1998, imposing a three-year moratorium on Internet access and sales taxes. The moratorium is set to expire Oct. 21.
The Direct Marketing Association is urging the committee to support the extension of the moratorium on Internet access taxes, as well as on new and discriminatory taxes on the Internet.
If the committee passes the bill, it will move to the full House for consideration.
