The Office of Inspector General says the U.S. Postal Service still has room for improvement.
In written testimony submitted to the Senate governmental affairs subcommittee during a hearing last week, inspector general Karla W. Corcoran said, “Over the last two years alone, our audits and investigations have identified over $500 million in savings, cost avoidance and waste, fraud and abuse in postal operations.”
The inspector general's testimony also discussed her office's efforts to support the nation's response to the recent terrorist attacks. Corcoran noted that her office's agents assisted in the rescue efforts at the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Arlington, VA, and are working with the FBI on cyber-terrorist threats.
Corcoran suggested that the postal service could benefit from strategic direction about its role in the 21st century, which can only come from Congress, as it did in the Postal Reorganization Act of 1970.
