Forrester Says Online Retail Stung by Slowing Economy

Internet retail has been hit hard by a slowing economy, according to a new survey whose results were released yesterday by Forrester Research and Greenfield Online.

The Forrester Online Retail Index found that total spending nationwide on online purchases dropped to $3.2 billion in June, from $3.9 billion in May.

The number of households shopping online dropped to 13.1 million in June, from 14.8 million in May.

Average spend by consumers also fell $20 in June to $245, from $265 in May.

The survey was eighteenth in Forrester's monthly series. The Forrester index is based on 5,000 responses in the first nine days of the month from an online panel put together by Greenfield Online, Wilton, CT. The survey results for June were fielded July 5-13.
