Filter, Urban Outfitters Team on Benefit CD

Filter Magazine, an independent music publication, debuts a double-CD compilation Nov. 1 co-branded with the Urban Outfitters retail chain to raise money for hurricane Katrina and Rita relief efforts.

It features previously unreleased tracks from Death Cab for Cutie, Tom Waits, TV on the Radio, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Radiohead. Also included are remixes of songs by Beck, Gang of Four and Calexico as well as album tracks by Grandaddy, Sigur Ros and British Sea Power.

Called the Filter Magazine/Urban Outfitters Hurricane Benefit Compilation, the $15 product will be sold exclusively at 80 Urban Outfitters stores nationwide and at www.urbanoutfitters.com. Filter produced a limited edition of 10,000 album copies to raise up to $150,000 for donation to the American Red Cross. This will help the charity with its ongoing hurricane relief work.

“We're providing an outlet to our audiences that allows them to take an action in the rebuilding process,” said Alan Miller, co-founder of Filter Magazine and Filter Creative Group, Los Angeles.

Filter is targeting Urban Outfitters' audience, a group that closely hews to its own demographics — taste-makers in their 20s and early 30s whose opinions on entertainment are viral. Filter caters to this group with a bimonthly frequency, covering up-and-coming bands, musicians, authors, artists and filmmakers.

The hurricane relief album in collaboration with Urban Outfitters is Filter's second in less than a year. The first was a Tsunami Benefit Compilation for relief efforts involving the Indian Ocean tsunami that hit in December.

“We were amazed at the outpouring of generosity in response to the Tsunami Benefit Compilation,” Miller said. “This benefit CD continues a conversation with these audiences by offering them an outlet to do something in the hurricane relief effort while providing them with the music that they love.”
