EBay, Microsoft Collaborate to Expand Online Presence

Microsoft Corp. and eBay Inc. have reached a deal to develop e-commerce applications for expanding their presence online, the companies said yesterday.

The agreement calls for Seattle-based Microsoft to integrate eBay's online marketplace into a number of its Web properties, including some of its worldwide MSN Network sites.

In turn, eBay, San Jose, CA, said it will support Microsoft's technologies and will be one of the first Web sites worldwide to offer Microsoft's community-based commerce application to Web developers as an XML-based online service.

Company officials also said they would use Microsoft software applications, including Windows 2000 Server and Passport.

The arrangement goes into effect later this year and will allow consumers increased access to eBay's trading services via a number of Microsoft Web properties.

Executives from both companies confirmed they are collaborating on other Web-related integration projects, details of which they declined to reveal.
