Much like their play on the field the past few seasons, the Mets‘ Thanksgiving email leaves a lot to be desired. The large picture of a pumpkin pie misses an opportunity for a more personal touch: a Mets player wishing fans a happy holiday.

Another swing and a miss is hiding discount exclusions—of which there are many—in the fine print. The discount doesn’t apply to 2014 jerseys, video games, select memorabilia, and many other coveted items. And the email’s mobile call-to-action is a complete strikeout: “Home for the holidays?” it asks, then recommending that fans who are home shop online via MLB’s mobile site.

White House | Black Market‘s email design is simple and elegant, consistent with its catalogs and direct mail pieces. The main image gives the reader the gist of the sale—25% off the entire purchase on Thanksgiving Day, while Black Book loyalty club members receive an extra 5% off—and a link to the website.

There are no photos of happy families enjoying a holiday dinner, just—as Joe Friday would say—the facts. The personalized subject line is a nice touch, and, if not for the use of the cheesy #GiveComplements hashtag in the copy that accompanies the second image, it would be flawless.

 


20% off 1 item + everything ships free—Happy Thanksgiving!

The subject line wastes no time: 20% off an item and free shipping for all purchases by midnight on Thanksgiving. That alone is enough to induce a click from even the most click-wary customer. However, Williams-Sonoma isn’t done there.

The email contains a beautiful scenic view with a heart-felt Thanksgiving message from the company at the top, and four teaser products that will be on sale on Black Friday. The email’s complete with several links back to the company’s site, including sale-specific landing pages and a store locator for shoppers who prefer to see and touch before they buy.

Staying true to its catchy email format, Desigual is playful while getting straight to the point: huge numerals display the Thanksgiving Day savings—in this case 30% off the season collection and 50% off outlet items—with links to sale- and product-specific landing pages in addition to a photo of a woman catching snowflakes on her tongue.

From the call-to-action in the subject line, to the engaging design, the email exudes an air of lighthearted professionalism and leaves recipients with no doubts about the urgency of the sale.
