Brightmail: Holiday Spam Reaches All Time High

Spam has reached an all-time high this holiday season, according to anti-spam technology vendor Brightmail.

Over 16 billion of more than 40 billion e-mail messages scanned by Brightmail in the course of providing its service were identified as unsolicited bulk commercial e-mail, the company said in a release yesterday.

This is a 21 percent increase in the amount of spam blocked by San Francisco, CA-based Brightmail before Thanksgiving, the company said.

Also according to Brightmail, spam has increased from 8 percent of Internet mail in 2001 to 40 percent in 2002.
