Zone28 Targets Retailers for Broadband Product

Software maker Zone28 Inc. is offering new technology for multichannel retailers and portals that are looking to sell online in a broadband experience.

Called Vivilog, the product supports high-resolution images, audio, video, 3-D and features tailored to the online retailer's requirements. This infrastructure can dovetail with existing systems, the year-old company said.

“A retailer needs to come to us because they need to start transitioning their business to a broadband model,” said Paul Gosselin, executive vice president of marketing at Zone28, New York.

Gosselin said the Vivilog technology allows users to zoom in, rotate or view video embedded in the screen. To access this option, a customer will have to click on the broadband link that shows up on the retailer's site.

Sandbox Interactive, a digital imaging studio, and Global Fashion Village, a provider of digital content, have partnered with Zone28 to develop Vivilog.

Zone28 is targeting retailers such as J. Crew Group Inc., Spiegel Group's Eddie Bauer, Lands' End and undisclosed shopping portals, Gosselin said.

But he said the broadband tech market for retailers is tough. Competitors include Web development companies such as Blue Martini Software, Intershop, Multimedia Live, RichFX and O2 technologies.

Still, Gosselin said there is potential for Vivilog.

“Broadband users will expect better tools and applications to shop, and right now there's nothing out there for them except for Flash sites … and some of the most dynamic applications are client-based, like AOL's instant messenger, Napster, Windows Media and Microsoft Outlook,” he said.
