Washington Post Web Revenue Up

The Washington Post Co. reported Friday that revenue from its online publishing division, mainly washingtonpost.com, jumped 32 percent to $12 million in the third quarter from $9.1 million for the year-ago period.

Online revenue rose 29 percent to $32.6 million in the first nine months of this year compared with $25.3 million for 2002, the company said. Local and national ad revenue increased 68 percent and 62 percent for the third quarter and first nine months, respectively.

A top performer was the jobs section of washingtonpost.com. Revenue from that section grew 32 percent in the quarter and 24 percent for the first nine months of 2003.

Overall, net income — including its newspaper, television, magazine and education interests — was $19.9 million for the third quarter ending Sept. 28, down from $47.8 million for that quarter last year. Overall revenue in the quarter rose 10 percent to $706.1 million. Revenue was also up at the education, cable TV and newspaper publishing divisions.
