The U.S. Postal Service filed a proposal in the Federal Register yesterday announcing that it will mechanically apply unique USPS identification codes to flat-size mail pieces not bearing POSTNET barcodes.
The ID code, printed on a label, will be mechanically applied to the address side of the mail piece in the bottom-right or top-left corner. Currently, these codes are manually applied.
The notice said the new system will reduce costs associated with labor-intensive manual keying. Deployment is scheduled for early 2004.
Application of these codes onto mail pieces will have no effect on current mailing standards or preparation requirements for flat-size mail.
