USPS Seeks Enhanced Whistleblower Protections

The U.S. Postal Service is pursuing policy changes to improve protections for employees who report illegal or fraudulent activities.

The USPS whistleblower protection rules will be revamped to reflect employee safeguards guaranteed under the Whistleblower Protection Act, postmaster general William Henderson said. While work on the changes is still under way, the USPS will institute provisions for the investigation of reprisal complaints by independent authorities.

Karla Corcoran, inspector general for the postal service, said she had been pushing for improved whistleblower protections in the USPS for four years. Corcoran's office is charged with protecting postal employees from reprisals when they report wrongdoing.

The directive to improve whistleblower protections will be among the last Henderson will sign before his retirement at the end of this month.
