U.S. May Allow Direct Mail Service With Cuba

The United States may allow direct mail service to and from Cuba, President Bush told reporters yesterday on Cuban Independence Day at the White House before flying to Miami.

In another concession to make life easier for the Cuban people, the president said that the United States would support private organizations that aid Cuba. But he ruled out lifting the four-decades-old trade embargo on the Castro regime unless democracy was introduced.

“Freedom sometimes grows step by step, and we will encourage those steps,” Bush was reported as saying.
