UPS Q2 Volume Gain Ahead of Schedule

United Parcel Service reported yesterday that domestic package volumes for the second quarter of 2005 are rising ahead of expectations and that international volumes are increasing as expected.

The company did not specify the exact rate of the domestic volume increase but said that international volumes are expected to rise at a double-digit percentage rate for the second quarter. UPS attributed the volume growth to an increased focus on the midsize customer market, including a realignment of its senior U.S. management to focus on midsize companies.

UPS expects 2 percent volume growth for the year, and the company is ahead of that projection. For the first quarter of 2005, UPS reported a 3 million-piece increase over volumes in the same period in 2004.
