Twitter rolls out ad service for SMBs

Twitter and American Express today launched Promoted Products for Small Businesses, a service allowing small- and medium-sized businesses to advertise on the microblogging site, said Twitter in a statement. The service, announced in February, is available to select American Express cardholders and merchants and will gradually roll out to an increased number of businesses.

Twitter’s new service, which the company detailed in a video, is designed to allow small businesses to leverage Promoted Accounts and Promoted Tweets to run promotional campaigns through Twitter. The Promoted Accounts service recommends Twitter users follow certain small businesses based on shared interests. The Promoted Tweets service promotes a small business’s most popular tweets. Companies signed up for the Promoted Products service pay for clickthroughs and new followers.

Promoted Products for Small Businesses will roll out to a “small group of businesses” initially, Twitter said in a statement. Twitter and American Express will increase the number of small businesses that can access the service over the next few weeks. Although the service has already launched, American Express cardholders and merchants can still register to participate.

The introduction of Promoted Products for Small Businesses marks the second major addition for Twitter’s ad service so far this year. In February, the company launched Promoted Products for mobile app users, which made the service available to Twitter customers using Android and iPhone on-device apps.

Twitter and American Express did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
