System Turns E-Mail Into Secured Company Library

E-mail software firm Tacit Knowledge Inc. last week announced its KnowledgeMail 1.3 system, which integrates company directories, intranets and Web sites.

Of those applications, the Palo Alto, CA-based firm mostly touts its e-mail profiling system included with its intranet program. A spokeswoman said the system allows users to place e-mail in a public or private folder, allowing an employee to share information while maintaining privacy.

Public e-mail is available to an entire company, serving as a small library of documents of interest to employees of the firm. KnowledgeMail 1.3 picks out key terms or noun phrases in the public e-mails and stores the phrases in a search engine, which enable employees to find current documents for research-based projects.

The spokeswoman said the public folder is secured from nonpermitted, outer-company readings and the private folder is safe from interfirm privacy violations. The system also categorizes the public e-mail folder by topic, time of entry and content density.
