Up to 52 percent of U.S. mobile phone users would opt in to a national wireless directory database if some privacy protection were put in place, according to a study by The Pierz Group, an information services market analysis firm.
The Pierz Group, Clarkston, MI, also found that 11 percent of consumers would opt in to the directory even without privacy protections. The proposal to create a wireless phone directory has been controversial because of public fears that it might attract unwanted telemarketing calls.
Commercial calls to wireless devices have long been illegal when made with automated dialing equipment. The wireless industry supports the creation of a wireless number directory.
The Pierz Group conducted the study online July 15 to Aug. 9. The sample of consumers included 1,503 respondents.
