Study Finds Digital Divide Closing

The digital gap between ethnic groups and young and old will shrink significantly by 2005, according to a study released by Jupiter Communications, New York. This year, there are 60 percent more white households online than there are African-American households. By 2005, this figure will shrink to 18 percent. Also, the 3.8 million Hispanic and 2.2 million Asian-American users will grow at double-digit rates annually for the next five years, according to the report, “Assessing the Digital Divide.” The age gap is closing as well as, children ages 2 to 12 online will increase from 32 percent this year to 62 percent by 2005. Seniors ages 65 and older online will increase from 16 percent to 48 percent by 2005.
