Streaming Media Goes Mainstream

Consumption of streaming media rose to an all-time high in November, according to a Nielsen//NetRatings report released yesterday.

Thirty-five million home Web users accessed streaming content last month, a 65 percent increase over the 21 million in November 1999.

Large media events are a significant reason for the rapid growth, according to T.S. Kelly, director of Internet media strategies at NetRatings. The Olympics, the 2000 election and the Super Bowl contributed to increased usage of streamed audio and video content.

The report stated that people with high-speed connections to the Web, adding up to 11.2 million home users in November, are more likely to consume streaming media content. Users with a broadband connection in the home were 50 percent more likely to access streaming media than their dial-up counterparts.
