Spiegel Posts Loss 1Q

Cataloger and retailer Spiegel Inc. reported yesterday that it lost $10 million, or 8 cents a share, in the first quarter of 1999. The deficit was narrower than the company’s loss of $23.1 million, or 19 cents a share, in the same period a year earlier. The seller of apparel and home furnishings reported revenue of $625.2 million in the most recent quarter, up 6 percent from $590.6 million a year ago. Spiegel, Downers Grove, IL, said catalog sales rose 5 percent in the first quarter, while total retail sales jumped 8 percent. The company’s Eddie Bauer division led the improved retail figures, with same-store sales increasing 4 percent.
