Republik Snares Polyglot

Polyglot Systems Inc. named The Republik, Durham, NC, as its first advertising agency of record to launch ProLingua, an emergency room translator.

The agency is responsible for trade ads and direct mail, corporate identity creation, exhibit design and collateral for the new service. Polyglot previously handled ads in-house with the help of freelancers.

ProLingua is a mobile computer system that lets emergency room staff talk to patients who do not speak English. Doctors, nurses or interns enter their questions on a touch screen programmed to recognize more than 6,000 medical phrases. The inquiries are translated into audible Spanish.

Polyglot, also of Durham, is preparing software for 19 other languages.

Since The Republik's founding in September 2001, it has bagged clients like Bald Head Island, Chapel Hill's Visiting International Faculty and Raleigh's Great Outdoor Provision Co., all of North Carolina; TracFone in Miami and PlayMaker Sports Advisors in Pittsburgh. The agency has a New York office, too.
