Report: Target Will Close 5 Catalogs

Five catalogs produced by Target Corp. soon will disappear from the direct marketing landscape, according to a report in the Star Tribune of Minneapolis.

The catalogs are Signals, I Love a Deal and three Marshall Field's books. The newspaper quoted a company spokesperson as saying that the catalogs will mail in the spring with fulfillment occurring through June. The catalogs' most popular items will remain available on the company's Web site.

The newspaper also reported that the company is closing an operation that sells incentive and recognition products to companies. Though the number of layoffs was not specified, spokesperson Lena Klofstad told the Star Tribune that they affected “less than 1 percent” of the company's corporate workforce in the Twin Cities. The newspaper stated that the firm has 5,000 employees at its downtown Minneapolis headquarters and nearly 3,000 at its financial services operation.

Klofstad said the company wants its Target.direct division to focus solely on Internet retailing. Calls to Target's headquarters were not returned.
