Press Reports Cabela’s Seeks Tax Break In Maine

Cabela’s may reconsider plans to open a megastore in Maine if it can’t convince the state to exempt it from collecting sales tax on catalog purchases by Maine customers, according to a report in the Aug. 28 Portland Press Herald.

Cabela’s argument is that its retail business is separate from the catalog business, according to the report. It also says that in the 19 states where Cabela’s has requested similar exemptions, all were granted.

A company spokesman for Cabela’s said the report is “a lot of speculation” as Cabela’s hasn’t even announced plans to open a store in Maine.

Several companies in Maine, including L.L. Bean, want the same rules applied to Cabela’s that they operate under, according to the report.
