Mail continues to move in central and southern Florida, but four postal facilities remained closed in the aftermath of Hurricane Charley yesterday, the U.S. Postal Service said.
Charley damaged “dozens” of post offices in Florida, and blackouts have darkened many, the USPS said. The non-operational facilities are in these cities and ZIP codes: Boca Grande, 33921; Fort Myers Downtown, 33901; Punta Gorda, 33950; and Zolfo Springs, 33890.
Operations in Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel and Captiva remain suspended. The post office in Captiva isn't accessible, and postal inspectors have been unable to get inside post offices on four other islands to check for damage, the USPS said.
However, plant operations in Fort Myers, Lakeland, St. Petersburg, Tampa and Manasota have returned to normal. All Florida post offices with power will operate normally, and those without power will have limited services.
Major mail operations in central Florida once again have power. Carriers are delivering mail to all accessible addresses, though longer-than-normal transit times are expected.
