Overstock gets personal for the holidays

Discount e-commerce site Overstock.com tapped ChoiceStream to personalize shopping recommendations throughout its Web site in time for the holidays.

With the ChoiceStream platform, Overstock, based in Salt Lake City, is able to customize merchandising that caters to each consumer’s individual likes and dislikes based on a customer’s behavior on the site. To target holiday shopping, Overstock is also using ChoiceStream for a personalized Gift Finder service.

” The goal of the Gift Finder is, quite simply, to make it easy for consumers to find gifts that recipients will love,” said Darren Gill, vice president of business development at ChoiceStream, Cambridge, MA.

“By doing this, ChoiceStream helps Overstock increase conversion, order size and session length as consumers rely on the site for their holiday shopping and build consumer loyalty by taking the hassle out of finding the right gift,” he said.

The Gift Finder platform considers the occasion for the gift, the age and gender of the recipient, the interests of the recipient, as well as the relationship between the shopper and recipient.

ChoiceStream uses all of this information to pull suggestions from the Overstock.com inventory and present diverse recommendations. Gift ideas include apparel, CDs, videos and DVDs, kitchenware, watches, jewelry, electronics and computers.

“This personalized experience will serve as a key differentiator for Overstock as it takes the hassle out of shopping for consumers,” Mr. Johnson said. “ChoiceStream personalization analyzes Overstock’s ever-changing, superabundance of inventory and automatically sifts through it to find just the right merchandise that matches each consumer’s tastes and preferences.”
