NY Times Debuts Paid Archives on Yahoo

Pursuing its paid-content strategy, New York Times Digital yesterday said online portal Yahoo will offer paid archives from NYTimes.com on its Yahoo News section.

Pertinent search results of archived material dating back to Jan. 1, 2000, will be branded as content from The New York Times. Each article can be bought for $2.50, essentially the same price as a single archive unit on NYTimes.com.

This is the first premium archived news service that will be offered by Yahoo, New York Times Digital said.

Concurrent with this move, technology news from The New York Times no longer will run on Yahoo News. Readers, however, will be able to access for free top current news from NYTimes.com through Yahoo News.

Like many traditional publishers, The New York Times Co. is working over time to monetize its online news divisions.

Most recently, NYTimes.com started offering paid streaming videos of the paper's Critic's Choice events. In the spring, Times sibling Boston.com's paid personals section garnered more than 8,000 members and 1 million page views in less than 20 days.
