NHL Buys Out IBM’s I-marketing Share

The National Hockey League took control of its own marketing destiny Friday after buying out its Internet partner, IBM.

The NHL spent approximately $10 million to take full financial control of NHL.com, according to wire reports. The league hopes to boost its exposure overseas and market more heavily to younger hockey fans.

There are also plans for the league to partner with foreign media companies to create local versions of the site, according to reports.

IBM will remain a hardware and software sponsor for the NHL.
