Newgistics Adapts SmartLabel for Mid-Sized Retailers

Newgistics Inc., a returns management solutions provider, is expected to announce today a new SmartLabel developed specifically to facilitate returns for mid-sized retailers.

The offering for mid-sized retailers is basically the same as the one for larger retailers, except that it is more of a “standardized, off-the-shelf product,” said Jonathan Dampier, vice president of marketing at Newgistics, Austin, TX. “What we have been offering to the bigger retailers is the ability to do a lot of customization work on the backend.”

With this new offering, Newgistics extends SmartLabel to mid-sized retailers that have annual, non-store returns of 10,000-50,000 a year.

There are roughly 700 retailers in that category, Dampier said.

“This is quite a large market that up until now really has not been served in the returns management space,” he said.

Newgistics manages returns for retailers like J.Crew, Neiman Marcus and Abercrombie & Fitch.

SmartLabel lets retailers offer customers a pre-paid, pre-addressed, bar-coded SmartLabel with their order. To return an item, customers affix SmartLabel to their package and drop it off anywhere the U.S. Postal Service retrieves mail.

Dampier said Newgistics could offer this solution to mid-sized retailers because of scale, primarily due to the growth of the company and its SmartLabel product. He also cited new technology that doesn’t cost much for mid-sized retailers to integrate into their systems.
