New PMG Should Be Selected on Qualifications Not Gender

Robert B. Swick urges the Postal Board of Governors to “include gender on an equal plane with the other major issues” in selecting the next postmaster general (“Why Can't a Woman Fill Runyon's Shoes at USPS?, April 27).

Since when should the fact that a person is male or female have equal bearing on that person's ability to mediate labor/management issues or achieve new standards in customer service, which Swick identifies as major issues facing the new postmaster?

Would it not be best for the postal service and its customers to have the board simply select the best person for the job? And if that person happens to be a female, then great! No one should ever be denied consideration or employment on the basis of gender, but elevating that characteristic to be considered as a qualification is just wrong.
