New FDA Commissioner Promises DTC Ad Crackdown

The newest commissioner at the Federal Drug Administration has promised to deliver a painful wake-up call to purveyors of misleading drug advertisements, wire services reported yesterday.

In his first meeting with reporters, FDA commissioner Mark McClellan said the agency would take more aggressive action to tackle drug ads that promise more than they can deliver, particularly in the diet supplement industry, according to reports. The FDA has come under fire recently for what critics say is a slow response to misleading drug ads, and it recently came to light that a Bush administration policy requires FDA lawyers to review every warning letter prior to mailing.

McClellan told reporters that the FDA would go beyond warning letters in the future and would not rule out court action, wire services reported.
