Micron to Offer Microsoft Office 2000 Features

Micron Electronics Inc., Nampa, ID, this week said it would provide its business customers with Office Online, a new, branded service solution that leverages Microsoft Office 2000 functionality through Micron’s Web-hosting division arm, HostPro, Los Angeles.

The move essentially makes Microsoft’s software releases available to Micron customers via subscription computing or “computing on demand.” And through HostPro, Micron said its computing-on-demand service will enable chief information officers and technology managers to choose their solutions from an extensive menu of Web-hosting and e-commerce offerings. The new delivery design will also let Micron customers choose various connectivity, computer hardware and management services with the option of upgrading their “subscriptions” as they grow.

Micron said its extension of Microsoft’s Office 2000 functionality through its micronpc.com brand name will come complete with Microsoft Office updates “eliminating the need for customer software maintenance or IT support.”

Michael Gale, chief Web officer at Micron Electronics, said the company’s ability to deliver Office Online via Hostpro would enable customers to harness the power of the Internet while accessing critical business applications to help them operate more efficiently and effectively.

At Microsoft Corp., Redmond, CA, Steven Sinofsky, vice president, said “Micronpc.com’s support of Microsoft’s Office Online application service offering will provide customers with another choice for using Microsoft Office. Delivering Office Online via Micron’s HostPro services will enable small- and medium-sized businesses to reap the benefits of Office 2000’s leading productivity applications while saving on administration costs.”
