Lockheed Martin, Bethesda, MD, won contracts worth nearly $9 million from the U.S. Postal Service to improve the Remote Computer Reader processing system.
The upgrade will increase processing capacity during peak times, such as holidays. This gives the postal service more flexibility in mail processing options, also beneficial during holidays.
“We are pleased that the USPS wants to continue our relationship, and our RCR is a good example of how systems could be continuously upgraded with the latest technology,” said Kimberley Davidson, Lockheed Martin spokeswoman.
The new system reads both printed and handwritten addresses. It now accurately reads 86 percent of handwritten addresses, up from 2 percent in 1995. The new system now reads 93 percent of printed addresses, up from 35 percent in 1995.
The system is installed in about 350 USPS processing and distribution centers in all major U.S. cities.
