Lands' End Posts Loss for Second Quarter

With flat sales in its core U.S. catalog and overseas operations and higher selling, general and administrative expenses, Lands' End reported Aug. 13 a $61,000 loss for the second quarter ended July 31. The loss is compared to net income of $3.4 million earned in the second quarter of 1997. Sales for the quarter were $239.2 million, up 8.8 percent from sales of $219.9 million in the same quarter last year. Gains in the companies specialty businesses, were countered by weaker sales in the company's core U.S. business, particularly in June, and soft sales from the company's foreign-based and export businesses.
