The head of the European Union’s group of data privacy regulators, Peter Scharr, said last week that computer IP addresses should generally be regarded as personal information. This determination could affect how search engines record data. Currently, IP addresses are retained as location indicators. However, Scharr argues that, excluding computers that are in Internet cafes and offices, machines are often linked to an individual name and require appropriate privacy standards.
