While commending the U.S. Postal Service yesterday on its response to the anthrax attacks, the postal service’s Office of the Inspector General also offered recommendations to postal management to improve its response to future threats.
The recommendations were taken from 10 reports the Office of the Inspector General posted on its Web site, www.uspsoig.gov. The summary report said the USPS “effectively communicated and took appropriate actions to explore and develop a sterilization process for anthrax-contaminated mail.”
But, to improve its response to future threats, the OIG had 24 recommendations to postal service management, including improving contracting procedures, reviewing contractors' performance and requiring criminal background checks for contract drivers transporting hazardous materials.
The Office of the Inspector General also announced that Unisys Corp., the information technology services and solutions company in Blue Bell, PA has agreed to pay USPS more than $880,000 to settle overbilling claims to Year 2000 computer work.
