In a move that could create entire new markets on the Internet, the 19-member board of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, Marina del Rey, CA, said yesterday they unanimously passed a resolution that will allow for new top-level domain names that will effectively challenge the “.com” domain. The resolution states that the new names will be decided upon at a vote in October and implemented by Dec. 31.
New domain names could possibly include delineations such as “.travel,” “.bank” or “.bakery” to signify topics more succinctly for Internet users.
Although applauded by companies who sell domain names, the resolution was criticized by some members of the board for being vague on who could eventually own the names, and how the public and corporations would use them.
