*House Committee Passes Bill Limiting Spam E-Mail

The U.S. House or Representatives' Commerce Committee yesterday approved a bill that limits spam e-mail.

The Unsolicited Electronic Email Act, or H.R. 3113, places several limits on e-mail marketers, including a requirement for a valid reply address and for companies to stop spamming upon request.

As well as allowing Internet services providers to establish spam policies, the act also allows victims to petition the Federal Trade Commission for a cease-and-desist order or to file a lawsuit.

The bill will now move to a full vote in the House. If approved, it will be sent to the Senate, where it will be reconciled with a companion bill.
