Google Image Search, at a 9.54 percent market share, is the most popular subdomain beyond the Google.com Web address, according to a custom category study from Internet monitor Hitwise USA.
The main Google address garnered a 79.90 percent share of all visits to the Google-owned domains. Google Mail at gmail follows at 5.51 percent, Google News at 1.49 percent and Google Maps at 0.82 percent.
Froogle, Google’s comparison shopping engine, got a 0.46 percent share, Google Video Search 0.45 percent, Google Groups 0.43 percent, Google Scholar 0.27 percent and Google Book Search 0.25 percent.
Hitwise found that the latest Google services haven’t yet captured a significant market share in their category.
For example, Google Finance ranks 39th in the business and finance – business information category, with a 0.29 percent share of all visits to the category. Yahoo Finance, by contrast, is No. 1 in that category, with a 35.6 percent market share.
Still, despite these vertical sites, the collective Google sites continue to receive traffic, accounting for 4.3 percent of all online visits for the week ending May 13.
