Germany’s Tribal DDB wins Best in Show at 2008 Caples Awards

At Last Thursday’s 30th annual John Caples International Awards, held in New York, 103 creative awards were given out to entrants from 21 countries, all praised for their “creative solutions to direct marketing problems.”

This year’s winner of the AndiEmerson Award, Proximity Worldwide creative leader and Worldwide board member Duncan Gray, said that award winners “are original, brave and push thebar higher for others in the industry.”

Dylan Taylor, creative director at BMF in Sydney was this year’s Wunderman award winner.

The Best in Show award went to Tribal DDBHamburg, Germany, for its “Schlämmer’s Quest” consumer Web site in the electronic/interactive category, created for Volkswagen AG. The campaign’s blog tracked the quest of German comedian Horst Schlämmer for a driver’s license and new car to attract a wife. The daily blog rose to the top of blog charts and podcast rankings.

USagencies won three second-place awards and two third-place awards. Chicago’s Draftfcb took second place for its U-Starvin.com site for Kraft Foods. Ogilvy New York won second place for its Inside Lenovo campaign for Lenovo.

Richmond, VA’s The Martin Agency won second and third place for its Caveman Therapy and Verne Troyer campaigns, respectively, for Geico.

Throughout the show, attendees paid tribute to Caples’ founder AndiEmerson, who died on February 13. Her son Chris shared the hope that members of the industry would “continue to step up and contribute” to the creative culture that his mother’s award ceremony celebrates.
