Gemstone Communications Inc.'s Ethnic Print Media Group is funding what it claims is the first national circulation audits and readership studies of African-American community newspapers.
The audit program includes 90 newspapers in 65 markets and 27 states, including the Chicago Citizen and New York's Amsterdam News.
The nation's 38 million African-Americans make up 12.3 percent of the population, according to Census Bureau data. These 12.1 million households generate annual income of $656 billion. The community's population grew nearly 16 percent from 1990 to 2000.
This is the second national multicultural newspaper study commissioned by Ethnic Print Media Group, following a recent initiative for 75 Hispanic community newspapers. The group is a media representation firm for several African-American and Hispanic newspapers.
