FTC Supports Privacy Initiative, Advocates Legislation

The Federal Trade Commission yesterday issued a report supporting the National Advertising Initiative’s self-regulatory proposal on online consumer profiling.

The principles of the NAI proposal address issues of notice, choice, access and security as they relate to online consumer profiling practices.

Internet network advertisers formed the NAI to set standards for industry profiling practices. Members — including 24/7 Media, DoubleClick, Engage and MatchLogic — have agreed to voluntarily put these principles into effect.

Despite the NAI proposal, the FTC is still calling for Congress to enact privacy legislation, according to the report. The full report is available at www.ftc.gov.
