Facebook testing coupons in ads

Facebook is testing an ad unit that would allow brands to deliver coupons via display ads, the company said on Dec. 15.

A Facebook spokesperson declined to comment on specifics regarding the ad unit, such as whether advertisers would be able to incentivize sharing in exchange for higher value coupons.

The ad unit will enable consumers to click to receive a coupon via email that can be redeemed online or in brick-and-mortar stores, according to Inside Facebook, which first reported news of the ad unit on Dec. 13.

Brands will also reportedly be able to attach a coupon to posts on their Facebook Pages, and consumers will be able to share the coupons with their friends via Facebook.

In August Facebook said that the company would be discontinuing its Facebook Deals product despite the product having launched only four months earlier. Facebook still operates a deals product through Check-In Deals, which rewards consumers for checking in to merchants’ locations.
